A journalist started to say, “Until last year, Virat’s position in the T20I team was in question…” but Dravid cut him off midway through, saying, “Not by us sir. Absolutely not, never ever by us!
Dravid responded to a question about why Kohli wasn’t playing in the T20Is despite being chosen to the ICC’s T20I squad of the year (2022) by saying, “There are certain priority we need to give to different white-ball events at particular points of time.” Due to our heavy cricket schedule, we have a chance to qualify for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the World Test Championship, and these upcoming matches are crucial from a qualification standpoint. After the Twenty20 World Cup, these six matches became the top priority because of the limited amount of time available for white-ball events.
To wit: “Virat, as you can see, has participated in all six games. In the next week, as we play T20 Internationals, he will get a break, along with Rohit and maybe one or two more men. We enjoy a productive week of camp before our match against Australia, and they return on the second feeling refreshed. To put it simply, priorities change. Some file types are more important than others.
India’s next encounter is Tuesday against New Zealand in the third and final one-day international of the series. The team captained by Rohit Sharma is currently up 2-0 and enjoys a commanding position in the series.
